Terms of Engagement

The terms on which La Danse Royale receives a dancer, a patron or an institution. The written confirmation of your engagement sits alongside them; where the two differ, the confirmation prevails.

Last revised — August 2026 Applies to every engagement
01

Admission

Lessons and programmes are offered by application. Submitting an enquiry does not create a booking. An engagement begins when the Atelier confirms dates and terms in writing and, where applicable, payment is received.

Every engagement is entered into with La Danse Royale as an organisation. It is not a personal contract with any individual teacher, and the Atelier may appoint another maître of equivalent standing where circumstances require.

02

Fees

Fees are quoted on application and confirmed in writing before the first lesson. Each quotation states the currency, whether Japanese consumption tax is included, and the rhythm of payment — by season, by block of lessons, or by session.

Unless the written confirmation states otherwise, fees fall due before the first lesson of the period they cover. Travel, studio hire, accompaniment and competition fees, where they arise, are quoted separately.

03

Cancellation and rescheduling

Unless your written confirmation states otherwise, a lesson cancelled with at least 48 hours' notice may be rescheduled once within the same season, subject to studio and maître availability. A lesson cancelled with less notice, or not attended, is chargeable in full.

Where the Atelier cancels a lesson, it is rescheduled at no further cost, or the fee for it returned. Where illness or injury interrupts an engagement, write to us: we would rather find a way to hold your place than hold you to a date.

04

Health, injury and your own responsibility

Ballet is physical training. You confirm that you are fit to take part, and that you have told us of any injury, condition, pregnancy or medication that may affect your training.

Teaching is delivered by maîtres who hold the Diplôme d'État de Professeur de Danse and who work with anatomical care, but they are not physicians: instruction is not medical treatment and not physiotherapy. Tell us at once if something hurts.

The Atelier recommends that every dancer holds personal accident insurance, and requires it for travel to competitions, auditions or residencies abroad.

05

Studio conduct

A lesson begins and ends at the hour agreed; please arrive with time to prepare. Attire suitable for classical practice, with the hair secured. Guests and observers attend by prior arrangement — save that a parent or guardian of a dancer under 18 may observe at any time, without arranging it in advance.

06

Photography

Nothing is photographed or filmed without asking first, and nothing is published without written consent. See the Privacy Policy, section 04.

07

Intellectual property

Choreography, exercises, written material and recordings supplied by the Atelier remain its property and are for the dancer's own use. They may not be republished, taught on, or used commercially without written permission.

08

Juniors

A dancer under 18 is admitted on application by a parent or guardian, who accepts these terms on the dancer's behalf and is responsible for fees. Our Safeguarding Policy applies to every engagement involving a minor.

09

Liability

Your agreement is with La Danse Royale. Any claim arising out of an engagement lies against the Atelier alone and — to the fullest extent permitted by law — not personally against its directors, teachers, guest maîtres, accompanists, employees or contractors, each of whom may rely on this section.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that may not lawfully be limited.

Subject to that, the Atelier's liability arising out of an engagement is limited to the fees paid for the engagement concerned. The Atelier is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and is not responsible for loss of or damage to personal property brought to the studio or to a venue.

10

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Japan, and the Tokyo District Court has exclusive jurisdiction of first instance over any dispute arising from them. Where the Atelier contracts with an institution outside Japan, the written agreement for that engagement prevails over this section to the extent the two differ.
